What does the government do about crime and the high cost of incarceration? Currently, the Federal government and many States are working to downsize our country's prison population through education and programming. These are seen as smart solutions, giving offenders the opportunity to graduate out of the criminal lifestyle. These solutions help prevent recidivism, but do not help reduce the prison population in the short term. They also do not address the most serious criminally minded prisoners.
The most serious of criminals want to take advantage of any potential release or financial success without any inward change. Secondly, there is not a lot that law enforcement can do without some form of expression of continuing criminality. Targeting someone officials believe to be involved in continuing criminality without significant evidence is unconstitutional. In parallel to education and programming you have to have increased levels of monitoring and evaluation. There is an advantage to this to offset the cost. The more you monitor and the deeper you evaluate offenders, yes you will expose the frauds and cheats, but on the other hand you will learn who is cooperating and trying to be a true success. So, scrutiny could cause some offenders to spend more time in prison, those who are successful should be released early. This would help drive those who embrace the criminal lifestyle to think twice and desire what the truly successful prisoners finds in a early release.
Today's criminal justice going forwards, will provide increasing opportunities to be successful, but must stand up to criminality and protect the public of those who choose to remain criminals. The public should respect that many prisoners who choose success, will be released early, and tax dollars are spent on those criminals who choose to remain failures. Let us move forwards towards success and walk in the footsteps of peace!
